Like most of my posts, this one’s a bit overdue. I actually finished this project back in November 2025, but with the holidays, I never got around to blogging about it like I hoped. But here we are and almost seven months later living with our kitchen shelf, I'm still so happy with it. Aside from being pretty to look at it's also very functional. So let me tell you how this all came about.
After living in this house for a year, I knew I wanted to replace the original cabinet in the kitchen corner—the one where the shelf is now. For the longest time, I went back and forth on whether I could keep living with that cabinet or if I was ready to give up the extra storage space.
It’s kind of like my current internal debate about whether to ditch the microwave for a decorative hood over the stove. Still TBD on that one.
Eventually, I just decided to go for it. Even though I had other projects planned for 2025, many of them didn’t quite take off. I realized it was better to focus on what felt doable and what fit within our budget.
This ended up being a great little weekend project, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Obviously the way we use or decorate this shelf will change throughout the seasons probably but for now it’s come in handy for smaller dishes, holding produce, dish towels, etc.
The cabinet that was here held most of our reusable cups, tumblers and tea necessities including supplements. So where did all of that get stored, you ask!? Well it got shuffled around and reorganized into our pantry and other kitchen cabinets. It gave me an excuse to reorganize and get rid of dishes, tumblers, cups, mugs that we no longer used on a regular basis.
The color of the shelf is Crownsville Gray by BM which I always have matched at Home Depot in the Glidden brand paint in Satin finish. Which means I eventually repainted our kitchen cabinets AGAIN for the third time and they look great IMO. I'll have to give a kitchen update soon as well. In the meantime....
I hope this gives you the inspiration to drastically change your space not only in one weekend but reason to give your space or kitchen a new look at a very low cost. You can shop this post or materials we used in the links below.
